To me my style is more about making the artist sound great than it is about my beat outshining the artist. Its a complementary co existence that has to happen in order for a record to be great and both parts (Vocals and Music) have to shine as a whole for greatest impact. I like to make records where the beat is hard and breathes so that the artist vocals shine through if they can deliver that type of performance and if not then I will complement their vocals with chords or pads or melodic or rhythmic lines and melodies so that the artist isn’t exposed. Its all about knowing the artist strengths and weaknesses and building a song around them and for them that works for their vocal skill set. The key is to know the artists abilities so that you can hit the bullseye.
